In my quest to write the most interesting novel possible, I'm seeing characters on TV shows in a whole different light. I happened on Mad Men a few days ago. I watched the whole series a couple years back, but in the interest of character study, I clicked on it again.
So, let's talk about Don Draper/Dick Whitman. I mean, seriously...talk about a reinvention of one's life. My story is about a woman who runs away from home to get away from her life, but this guy, he is the real deal. Can you imagine living in Don Draper's head? He's a corporate scum bag, but I'm not going to lie, I feel a little bit sorry for him. True, he reinvented himself completely, but once a messed up kid, always a messed up kid.
Then there's Betty Draper, his picture perfect, frigid housewife, spouse. She talks to her children with absolutely no affect at all. No wonder little Sally has such a time of it. But poor Betty doesn't really love Don, does she? Did she ever? She lived during a time when women were lesser than men, in all ways. I can't imagine wearing the pearls, cooking the meals, serving the drinks...mind boggling.
And what about Pete Campbell? Yuuuuukkkk! I can't even find the words. Slime-a-rama.
Anyone want to contribute? I'd love to hear your thoughts on these characters. And any others, like Peggy, Joan, or Roger. Let's have a conversation! Gintonica and I eagerly await your responses!
My favorite character— of course—was Peggy. To watch her manage the male dominated, sexist world and find her way to not only survive but also find a measure of success. The pivotal science for me was in her GYN appointment when she was schooled on morality by the cigarette smoking DR.
